Smart Knife Storage Design: In-Counter Knife Block

Looking for a creative way to store your knives? Want to keep them close to hand, but think a magnetic knife rack leaves them too exposed? Well, here's an interesting idea that cropped up a couple times during our recent Small Cool Kitchens 2011 contest — the in-counter knife block.

This example is from Wendy's Custom-Renovated Vancouver Kitchen. She said that she didn't want to use a magnetic knife strip or a bulky knife block. So her fiance transformed a $20 Ikea KRAFTIG cutting board into an in-counter knife block. The knife blades hang down into an empty space behind the microwave under the counter.

Here's another example, from Barbara's Remodeled Condo Kitchen. I especially like the way that the knives are integrated here with the butcher block; you can pull them out and get right to work, chopping.

Of course, this storage solution isn't for everyone. And if you haven't yet invested in knives that you'll own for the long-term, this really may not be for you, since you'll have to create just the right amount of slots for the knives you have.

But for a cook with a small kitchen and a firm lineup of well-loved knives, this can be a great way to make use of narrow strips of counter space, and to save room in the drawers.

What do you think? Is this a storage option you'd try in your own kitchen?
