Steak & Crème Brûlée: A Rich Yet Easy Valentine's Menu

When it comes to Valentine's Day, I like to keep it simple yet rich. After the healthy living and fresh start of January, I like to splurge a bit on Valentine's, whether it's just for myself, or for myself and a loved one. Here's a very, very simple three-course menu you can whip up tonight for one or more!

The Menu

• To start: Pink Pepper Goat Cheese Spread - A pretty-in-pink warm goat cheese spread. Very quick and easy.

• For dinner: Oven-broiled steak and a simple arugula salad. If you love steak, as I do, then Valentine's Day is the perfect time to indulge in a piece of dry-aged, well-raised meat. Buy the very best beef you can afford, dust it with salt and pepper, and cook it in the oven, like we show above. Perfect crust and juicy meat. Round it out with a spicy, tangy arugula salad and some good bread.

• To finish: Crème Brûlée. Broiled in the oven until it's dark and crispy on top, with plenty of burnt sugar loveliness to balance out the sweet, rich cream underneath.

• To drink: Red, white, bubbly, or sweet! Some wine recommendations for you.

The Shopping List

To Buy
• 8 ounces goat cheese
• Pint of heavy cream
• Eggs
• Fresh thyme
• Baby arugula
• Pink peppercorns
• 1 pound good-quality ribeye steak
• A loaf of good bread
• Pink peppercorns
• Wine (at least one bottle — maybe two!)

From Your Cupboard
• Honey
• Kosher salt
• Freshly ground black pepper
• Granulated sugar
• Confectioner's sugar
